Although an extremely volatile country, Colombia's fog-laden mountains, charming colonial cities, golden-sand beaches, ancient Indian culture and vast green stretches of the Amazon rain forests are inviting. The region is a blend of Colombian customs and Spanish colonial influences. The rich cultural tradition of the country is evident from its folklore, arts, crafts, stone sculpture, pottery and gold work.
Soapstone carvings, coffee, straw items, hats, Colombian handicrafts and hammocks make great buys. Interesting activities for tourists are mountain climbing in Santa Marta or watch bullfighting in Medellin or Manizales. The popular local cuisine consisting mainly of Ajiaco soup, a Bogotan speciality, savoury cornmeal empanadas, delicious pandebonos and puchero are worth trying.
