This central African country located on the equator has a rich historical background. The first known inhabitants of the area were Pygmies and the region was home to a number of tribal kingdoms. Having been the victim of a long civil war, the country is still prone to sporadic violence; hence the travellers are advised to be extremely wary. Congo is the place to enjoy ethnic Central African tribal culture, pirogues rides (canoe-type boats), dance, music, dense rain forests, lush river scenery and stunning waterfalls. Woodcarvings, semiprecious gems, jewellery, local paintings, traditional African masks and sculptures of the Bakongo, Bateke, Bakuyu and Bakwele peoples make great souvenirs.
