The positive side to the long freedom struggle and civil war that Guinea-Bissau has faced is the relatively unspoilt natural scenery, abundant wildlife and isolated beaches. Rare species of flora and fauna, mangrove swamps, colonial remains of Portuguese era constitute prime sightseeing activities. Visit the Cantanhez Natural Park to see the protected species of birds, monkeys particularly chimpanzees. The village of Xitole is great to explore the surrounding forests and see the Saltinho waterfall. The Latin-style Bissau carnival with parades, music and dancing in colourful costumes gives you an undiluted taste of the local culture.
